For a decade, the world has known Detroit as the "Birthplace of Techno." But these days, Detroit is also home to a whole new generation of producers and deejays exploring life after techno. Comin' From Tha D: Ghetto-Tech is a first-ever compilation of Detroit artists from the city's premier dance labels joining together to give the world its first city-wide taste of Ghetto-Tech.
Just as a decade ago adventurous Detroit deejays put Kraftwerk and P-Funk together to rock a party and invented "techno" in the process, 1999 finds Detroit deejays rocking parties by putting together "ghetto" (bass, hip-hop) and "tech" (electro, drum 'n bass) into a Detroit-bred sound known as "ghetto-tech." Comin' From Tha D contributors DJ Assault and DJ Godfather first coined "ghetto-tech" with their pitched-up and trick-heavy style of mixing hip-hop, electro, and booty tracks; each has built an underground empire for themselves and have been featured in the likes of Rolling Stone, Spin, Raygun and Mixer magazines, as has the whole Detroit Ghetto-Tech phenomenon. Ghetto-Tech has since become synonymous with the newer sound(s) of young Detroit, typified by the anything-goes spirit of speeding up and cutting up different styles (drum 'n bass, electro, etc.) into one manic mix.
Detroit promoter Jon Layne founded Intuit-Solar Records as a platform for these emerging Detroit artists, and, in true Ghetto-Tech spirit, assembled this first-ever compilation into a continuous mix at Carl Craig's Emlas studio. Comin' From Tha D: Ghetto Tech features, besides electro-bass tracks from Assault and Godfather, electro and hip-hop rhythms courtesy of IT/Star 67's Ectomorph and Le Car, as well as Dan Bell, Shake and others; an epic jungle/jazz track from Planet E's beat-scaper Recloose, as well as techno-tinged Detroit drum 'n bass tracks from Matrix's Sean Deason, Soiree's Derrick Thompson and Seismic's Michelle "The Punisher" Herrmann. Even Detroit hard house legend Terrence Parker breaks rank and throws in a down-tempo hip-hop track for the cause.
As a first-ever compilation of new Detroit artists from so many of the city's premier dance labels (Planet E, Matrix, IT, etc), Comin' From Tha D: Ghetto Tech shows how Detroit continues to evolve and, most importantly, move minds as well as behinds.
Comin' From Tha D is available on three series vinyl and a continuous mixed CD.
