"So This is the Dining Room," Recloose's first critically-acclaimed 1998EPon Planet E drew upon a variety of musical sources, owing much to theheritage of jazz, the left-field approach of dub reggae, thecut-and-pastestyles of hip-hop, and the dancefloor sensibilities of disco and house. In the year or so that has followed, Recloose (aka Matt Chicoine) hasgonefrom short order cook at Detroit's Russell Street Deli ? having slippedhisdemo into a takeout order for Planet E founder Carl Craig - to one ofthepremier leftfield DJ/producers from Techno's epicenter. His unique approach to DJing (which he calls shapeshifting, "Blending andbending styles that you might not expect to hear in the same musicalpackage, anything goes.") has earned him a second room residency at DetroitxsMotorLounge, while his production skills have landed the respect of hispeers, appearing on Innerzone Orchestraxs Programmed album, as part ofhigh-profilecompilations such as Freezone 5 (SSR) and Cominx From Tha Dx(Intuit/Solar)as well as a member of the live Innerzone touring band hitting the roadthisFall in the US. Spelunking, the new Recloose EP, goes deeper, further exploring andredefining the reference points merely hinted at on ...Dining Room. Recloose takes a progressive perspective on the dancefloor with thedrivingshuffle of the Derrick May meets Moodymann "Soul Clap 2000" and theLatin-inflected electro-funk of "Get There Tonight" while showing hisdevelopment in the downtempo groove on the warm analog-treated bossanovaof"Landscaping," laden with skittering breakbeat flavor and the ColtranemeetsMassive Attack of "Insomnia In Dub." Recloose. Spelunking. Classic music. Reinterpreted for the Year 3000. |
